The FANS Upgrade and Keeping Your Aircraft Compliant
For many of our SmartJets clients, understanding the importance or benefits of the Future Air Navigation System or FANS can get complicated by the detailed and technical language associated with the publication of the information. Most of our owners and/or clientele just want the “bottom line” explanation for “What is it?” and “What does it mean to me?”
Bottom Line? The FANS system offers not only improved safety but additionally offers access to better and more direct routing, which in turn can save time, fuel, and even reduce number of stopovers on longer flights. Below, we have encapsulated the information about the FANS updates, benefits, and due dates for compliance in a more ‘reader’ friendly synopsis, which is not intended to be the sole source of information. As always, you should rely on your own maintenance department or other professional technical support personnel for information and planning for your upgrades.

WHAT IS FANS 1/A+?
Future Air Navigation System/(FANS) 1/A+ solutions replaces the current system of “verbal position reports” (using HF radio communications) which can be unreliable and hard to understand.
The FANS system offers automatic satellite-based text position reports delivered directly to air traffic control from the aircraft’s onboard Flight Management System (FMS) and DataLink system. This method of communicating flight information can reduce operating costs, as it allows for more direct routing, and increases safety by decreasing possible misunderstanding of “verbal position reports”. A majority of commercial aircraft have used the FANS 1/A+ for decades, while only a small percentage of business jet aircraft have had the system available. Now, changing regulations will have business jet aircraft equipped with and gaining the benefits of the FANS system. Read more
